One in four women die of heart disease and the risk is increased in Black and Latina communities. In fact, according to the American Heart Association, 49% of Black women over the age of 20 have some type of heart disease, which includes high blood pressure and clogged arteries. This is why the cardio you get from spinning is a vital piece to add to your overall health plan. According to a study, funded by the British Heart Organization, cycling lowers your risk of dying from a cardiovascular disease by over 50%.

The best part about cycling is that it is low-impact, meaning there is less jumping and strain on your knee and ankle joints, but it is also high-intensity giving you a workout that feels like you did an hour of kickboxing or running. As mentioned before, spinning is a high-intensity workout, which means you will sweat along the way. As an example, if you’re spinning at a moderate pace for the typical hour-long class, you’ll burn anywhere from 400 to 650 calories per session according to a Harvard Health study. Giving the focused nature of the workout, you don’t have to worry about wasting time or money at the gym because you only have to focus on doing one thing: SPIN! It’s great for those who might be easily distracted or if you want to KNOW you got a good workout.

Just to note, the American Heart Association recommends 150 minutes of moderate exercise per work OR 75 minutes of vigorous exercise, meaning building up your spin routine could potentially decrease your workout time in half.
