Interested in trying a spin class, but hesitant to start?
If you’re new or a novice, a spin class could be intimidating. Trust u when we say intimidating is far from the truth!
A spin class is filled with the benefits of a healthy fitness strategy, with the added bonus of a dedicated community of motivating trainers and spin-mates. In case you need more of a reason, here are four benefits you will gain from attending your first spin class. That’s right these benefits are immediate!
Result 1 Your heart will love you
One in four women die of heart disease and the risk is increased in Black and Latina communities. In fact, according to the American Heart Association, 49% of Black women over the age of 20 have some type of heart disease, which includes high blood pressure and clogged arteries. This is why the cardio you get from spinning is a vital piece to add to your overall health plan. According to a study, funded by the British Heart Organization, cycling lowers your risk of dying from a cardiovascular disease by over 50%.
Result 2 Your knees will too
The best part about cycling is that it is low-impact, meaning there is less jumping and strain on your knee and ankle joints, but it is also high-intensity giving you a workout that feels like you did an hour of kickboxing or running. Even more beneficial, because you are getting tons of oxygen to these areas you are able to improve their health.
Result 3 You’ll be surrounded by a team
You’ll rarely take a spin class alone, first, you will be paired up with a super motivating instructor and then you will be surrounded by spin enthusiasts who enjoy group exercise. If you’re lucky you’ll be in a community where the motivation to build health and happiness is in and outside the classroom. Finding a local group like Black Women Cycle will give you the opportunity to connect with women, like you, who support each other, while having tons of fun on their spin journey.
Result 4 Oh, yeah you’ll burn TONS of Calories
As mentioned before, spinning is a high-intensity workout, which means you will sweat along the way. As an example, if you’re spinning at a moderate pace for the typical hour-long class, you’ll burn anywhere from 400 to 650 calories per session according to a Harvard Health study. Giving the focused nature of the workout, you don’t have to worry about wasting time or money at the gym because you only have to focus on doing one thing: SPIN! It’s great for those who might be easily distracted or if you want to KNOW you got a good workout.
Given the benefits of a spin class, it is clear to see it is low risk and high value. You will contribute to your physical, mental, and social health every time you take a class. Just to note, the American Heart Association recommends 150 minutes of moderate exercise per work OR 75 minutes of vigorous exercise, meaning building up your spin routine could potentially decrease your workout time in half. They are often cost-effective, so you’re wallet will also be grateful. Plus there are spin classes EVERYWHERE, so you’ll never run out of options. Spinning is truly a win, win, win, win!
